note 1 : The NW European Little Tern Project is a multinational cooperation of Little Tern ringers from the national ringing schemes of Denmark (Copenhagen Bird Ringing Centre), Germany (Vogelwarte Helgoland and Vogelwarte Hiddensee), the Netherlands (Vogeltrekstation Arnhem), Lithuania (Lithuanian Bird Ringing Centre) and Africa (South African Bird Ringing Unit, SAFRING), lead and coordinated by Aarhus University, Denmark. The project uses a combination of metal rings from the respective ringing scheme on one tarsus and a dark-green 3-digit coded colour-ring on the other tarsus.

note 2 : From 2017 to 2024 (incl.) a total of 1.783 adults and 749 larger chicks have been colour-ringed in various breeding colonies across Denmark, Germany, Lithuania and the Netherlands as well as in the wintering area in Senegal.

note 3 : General position of the colour-ring is left tarsus (birds ringed in Denmark) or right tarsus (birds ringed in Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Senegal). However, foreign ringed Little Terns controlled and additionally colour-ringed by this project may have the colour-ring on the opposite tarsus depending on the position of their metal ring.

note 4 : dark-green rings with a white three numeric code are used in Senegal exclusively.
