note 3 : the present project aims at enabling the formulation of an effective and sustainable conservation framework for the lesser kestrel at 3 SPA sites, holding >75% of the species population in Greece and 6% of the EU population, by providing well focused conservation planning and implementing concrete conservation actions needed to ensure a positive population trend for the local species population, namely an increase of at least 15% within the 48 months of the project duration. The project will be implemented by a well structured partnership, involving the Laboratory of Agricultural Biodiversity of the University of Thessaly, the local Municipality of Rigas Feraios, the Management Authority of the SPA site of lake Karla, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (Birdlife in Greece) and the private consultancy NCC Ltd. The project has already gained a wide local support, including the Ministry of the Environment, the Regional Government of Thessaly, local farmer associations, and NGOs.
