The project aims at supporting the populations of the globally endangered Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in Bulgaria through direct conservation measures and wide public involvement, namely: maintaining Lesser Kestrel habitats; promoting the most beneficial and effective “Lesser Kestrel Friendly” land-use practices; restocking the Lesser Kestrel in Bulgaria through captive breeding and translocation of non-fledged birds from Spain; establishing a free colony of Lesser Kestrels in Sakar SPA and providing favourable conditions for natural re-establishment of the species in Byala reka and Krumovitsa SPAs; developing a scientific network of experts to exchange information, best practices and “know-how” on Lesser Kestrel conservation.
The project will be implemented by Green Balkans - Stara Zagora NGO, as a Coordinating Beneficiary (www.greenbalkans.org), and EURONATUR (www.euronatur.org) and DEMA (www.demaprimilla.org) in their capacity of Associated Beneficiaries."

note 3 : the present project aims at enabling the formulation of an effective and sustainable conservation framework for the lesser kestrel at 3 SPA sites, holding >75% of the species population in Greece and 6% of the EU population, by providing well focused conservation planning and implementing concrete conservation actions needed to ensure a positive population trend for the local species population, namely an increase of at least 15% within the 48 months of the project duration. The project will be implemented by a well structured partnership, involving the Laboratory of Agricultural Biodiversity of the University of Thessaly, the local Municipality of Rigas Feraios, the Management Authority of the SPA site of lake Karla, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (Birdlife in Greece) and the private consultancy NCC Ltd. The project has already gained a wide local support, including the Ministry of the Environment, the Regional Government of Thessaly, local farmer associations, and NGOs.
