note 3 : this projects is about the migratory soaring birds monitoring in the Barão de S. João windpark.
This is a Project born after the environmental assessment evaluation of the Barão de S. João windpark, located in the SW corner of Portugal. The environmental impact declaration resulting from this process establishes a few compensatory measures and monitoring plans. Among those plans we have the «Soaring Migratory Birds Monitoring Plan». To fulfill the goals of this plan, there’s the need to capture and mark soaring migratory birds in the Sagres area, SW of Portugal, with wingtags. The aim is to get data about the movements and spatial-use of the area of those soaring migrants. Even more important, the data provided by capture-mark-recapture should allow us to better know local movements in the area, and run as a complement to the studies that are being conducted regarding to windpark-soaring migrants interaction. Then, we should be able to identify in which sectors should we conduct the efforts to minimize the negative impacts of the windpark.
It’s essential that soaring migrants should be captured during the autumn migration, both in Sagres and Barão de S. João, namely Booted Eagle, Griffon Vulture, and others.
Visual recapture, possible by a team of observers strategically placed, is possible using the same methodology that’s being used for the last 5 years. We also aim to collect data regarding the spatial-temporal patterns, such as how long those the species stay in the area during the migratory process, individual movements in the area, and, if possible, in other areas of the planet.
